NWTR 2009 Routes

Route maps for this years NWTR are now available for viewing below. The Long Ride is shown in blue, the Medium Ride is shown in red, and the Short Ride is shown in green. High resolution maps and descriptors of all six rides will be available at the Registration desk on Friday, July 3rd.

For the three choices of fully supported rides on Saturday, a lunch is available at the Saanich Fairgrounds, in addition to two rest stops; one at the Model Airplane site called
Michell's Airpark; and one at the Saanich Municpal Hall Parking lot. Sunday’s three rides feature a lunch stop at the South Vancouver Island Rangers Campground and two Rest Stops; one at the junction of Atkins Rd. and the Galloping Goose Trail; and one near Gonzales Bay at Ross St Park. The period of operation of both the lunch and rest stop is noted on each of the maps. Generally, the operating time period is abouit two hours.

Each rides varies in both distance and elevation. Although Saturday rides are longer, the relative change in elevation is small. Whereas on Sunday, there are some challenging climbs, but the return distance to the university will not be as long as on Saturday. Here is a summary of these rides:

Saturday:
    Ride 1 Short: 61 km (38 miles)
    Ride 2 Medium 87 km (54 miles)
    Ride 3 Long 99 km (61.6 miles)
Sunday:
    Ride 1 Short 66 km (41 miles)
    Ride 2 Medium 81 km (50 miles)
    Ride 3 Long 93 km (58 miles)

Although all rides commence and end at the university, Saturday’s ride will begin sharply at 9 AM when there will be a Mass Start of all tandems, exiting from Parking Lot #2 then onto the entrance to the University Ring Road, Sunday tandem riders embarke around 9 AM from Parking Lot #5, next to the UVIC Campus Residences.

On each day, you will notice several SAG vehicles along the routes. Anytime you are in need of some assistance, simply flag down one of these vehicles for help. Each vehicle will carry some common spares, but any major repairs or adjustments should be made at the Lunch Stop. In any case, an Emergency Road Assistance telephone number is present on each map.

Be careful! There are some very busy intersections and road crossings on both the Saturday and Sunday routes. So, use caution and common sense when crossing.
